My relationship with grief began young. I lost my father at age 9 and then my beloved grandmother at 17. I began studying death and grief, anything I could get my hands on to make sense of the pain and emptiness. I found "On death and dying" by Elizabeth Kubler-Ross. She was a comfort. I studied world religions. My curiosity was insatiable. I fell in love with Buddhism in my teens. It felt like home. I created a program of study for a semesters credits while at The Evergreen State College relating Jungian psychology, Buddhism and death and dying. It was a healing and fascinating journey.
Along my way I came across Roshi Joan Halifax and Upaya Zen Center. She was offering a course on dying and grief work, so I gobbled it up.
Loss through death has been a lifelong teacher and I respect her, although I am still somewhat unwelcoming. As I have matured, I choose to use this history of experience. I have created a safe haven for those in grief to share a space where all is allowed. The tools I have accumulated over my years are open for those to utilize as we create a safe container to express and make friends with our losses. In time we may even find the many wisdoms that death and grief bestow upon us.
